Sri Lankan Tamil Beetroot Curry (Beetroot Paal Curry)
In many Sri Lankan Tamil households, beetroot curry is more than just a side dish. Its vibrant magenta colour, creamy coconut milk, and sweetness from the beets make it both comforting and unforgettable. Whether served during everyday meals, temple feasts, or thalis, it holds a special place on the plate and in the heart.
I’ll always thank my mother for teaching me this dish. I remember standing beside her in our kitchen, watching as she skillfully julienned the beets and tempered mustard seeds and curry leaves in coconut oil. The aroma would fill the house—sweet, spiced, and unmistakably familiar. It wasn’t elaborate, but it was beautiful in its simplicity: creamy, gently spiced, and full of warmth.
Now, I prepare it just as she did. The sound of mustard seeds popping in the pan still brings back those memories—of laughter, of home, and of meals that meant more than just nourishment. This curry is a staple in Tamil kitchens, especially across the North and East. And every time I make it, it’s a reminder that food is love, memory, and tradition—all simmered together in one comforting dish.
Ingredients:
-
2 medium beets, peeled and julienned or diced
-
1 small red onion, finely sliced
-
2 cloves garlic, crushed
-
1 green chili, slit (optional for heat)
-
1 sprig curry leaves
-
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
-
1/2 tsp fennel seeds (optional, but traditional)
-
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
-
1/2 tsp Sri Lankan roasted curry powder (or regular curry powder)
-
1/4 cup thick coconut milk
-
1/2 cup thin coconut milk or water
-
Salt to taste
-
1 tbsp coconut oil (or vegetable oil)
Instructions:
-
Tempering: Heat coconut oil in a pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and fennel seeds. Let them splutter. Add curry leaves, sliced onions, garlic, and green chili. Sauté until soft and fragrant.
-
Spice it up: Add turmeric and curry powder. Sauté for 30 seconds to bloom the spices.
-
Add beetroot: Stir in the julienned or diced beetroot. Mix well to coat with the masala. Pour in thin coconut milk (or water), add salt, and cover. Let it cook on medium-low for about 10–12 minutes, until the beetroot is tender.
-
Creamy finish: Pour in the thick coconut milk once the beets are soft. Stir and simmer uncovered for another 5 minutes until the curry thickens slightly.
-
Serve: This curry pairs beautifully with steamed red or white rice, dhal curry, and tempered greens.
Tips:
-
Add a small pinch of sugar to enhance the beet’s natural sweetness—especially if your beets are earthy rather than sweet.
-
For a dry version (known as beetroot varai), skip the coconut milk and finish with grated coconut.
